Tarragona
Tarragona city is located in the southeast of Catalonia and is the capital of Tarragona’s province with a surface of over 60 square kilometres. It is geographically located right in the Costa Daurada and the capital city has a population of 134,085 inhabitants.
Thinking about Tarragona is thinking about history. Even if the Greeks were the ones who introduced the port for trade, only the Romans made use of the area. Tarragona became the capital of Hispania Citerior during the Roman Empire and still preserves many buildings from this period. Its amazing archaeological remains are recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You can discover the walls that were built in the 3rd century BC surrounding the historic centre, the Roman amphitheatre which in its day had capacity for more than 12,000 people, the theatre, the circus, the pretorium…
But Tarragona was not only of Roman heritage, it also has a vibrant medieval history ( not forgetting its Cathedral of Santa María, a building constructed on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter and a Muslim mosque) and a picturesque fishing and marina neighbourhood.
Tarragona is also surrounded by golden sandy beaches and crystal clear waters which gives the name to the area where it is located : “Costa Daurada” , all these sights and many more will invite you to relax and enjoy a fulfilling stay in this amazing city.
